Murder are a folky duo from Denmark who have their very own special take on neofolk. Jacob Bellens and Anders Mathiasen have been playing together for 14 years. Jacob’s distinctive voice is focused by a mostly acoustic 70s inspired sound and has been compared with such luminaries as Johnny Cash and Nick Drake. Murder’s songs tell arresting stories that engage the listener whilst being delivered by an all together rather soothing voice. It has been almost four years since Murder released their critically acclaimed “Stockholm Syndrome” L.P. and their new album ’Gospel of Man" was just released this past October. The new record is a more expansive effort than “Stockholm Syndrome” was, but the complexity and their uniqueness remains intact. Stuart Staples of Tindersticks fame declared that Murder was his favourite new band in an interview with Pitchfork in March 2009: “We played some shows with this Danish band Murder earlier this year, and I’ve become a fan. Simple music and melodies, but with real depth and mystery in the songs… and what a voice.” Their music has captured the hearts of critics and punters alike, and has elicited some rather strong praise indeed being described as “overwhelmingly beautiful” and “…the best rock vocalist in Denmark”.
