Fjorden Baby! first came to national attention when their song “Karoline” was playlisted on NRK P3 back in 2008. They then came second in NRK’s Urørt competition (a kind of national battle of the new bands) and that paved the way for their eponymous debut in January 2009. The record was an all together deeper proposition than the preceding single however, with clear reference points in reggae and dub. New-wave elements and lyrics in their native Bergen dialect caused comparisons to me made with the likes of cult bands The Aller Værste and Gjennomslag. The critics were excited nevertheless. Dagsavisen (big Norwegian daily) went as far as to say that the five-piece were among the vanguard of new Norwegian rock bands, whilst NRK remarked “…the debate on the future of Norwegian rock is over.” That their peers Lars Vaular and John Olav Nilsen & Gengen, all from the same neighbourhood, broke through at the same time, meant that there was suddenly talk of a Loddefjord-wave in Norwegian music. This past year the band have been working on a new record with producer Yngve Sætre, Jørgen Træn, Anand Chetty and Kato Ådland. They still write all their material together, with vocalist Sturle Kvilekval delivering the lyrical content. There are clear references to the Madchester culture of the early 90s, both in terms of the music and their aesthetic. The first single “Rendezvous” was released in October, with the album scheduled for sometime in early 2011.
