Nive Nielsen is from Nuuk in Greenland and The Deer Children centre around multi-instrumentalist (and boyfriend) Jan de Vroede alongside a shifting cast of other musician friends. Nive has been compared to artists like Cat Power, Bjørk and Neko Case, but as a Greenlander without access to a single record store and mind-blowingly slow internet she’d not actually heard any of these artists before moving to Ottawa in Canada to study. Though a mutual acquaintance, producer John Parish (eels, PJ Harvey) got to hear some of the rough demos she’d recorded in her attic with her boyfriend, and subsequently decided to work with her. The result is the album “Nive Sings”. The record features a host of contributors, including Howe Gelb, members for Wolf Parade, The Black Keys, Godspeed and Unicorns. Thus far the record has only actually come out in Greenland, where in a country of only 56,000 inhabitants, it has already sold a whopping 4500 copies.
